Manage Your Weight Successfully

Feb 16, 2021

As we embark on a new year and January bleeds into February, and February races toward March, weight management once again becomes a hot topic. Losing weight is one of the most popular resolutions each new year, yet many who claim it do not even know their actual current weight. Successful weight loss, gain, and management plans all rely on a healthy diet, appropriate exercise, and data. Necessary data includes weight, BMI, and body fat percentage – all of which can be measured and/or tracked with a high-quality smart scale.

Various Methods to Track Your Weight

If your goal involves weight management (which can be losing, gaining, or maintaining weight), you must keep track of where you are and if you are making any progress. There are several methods useful for keeping track of your weight and putting you on pace to manage your weight.

  • Use a smart scale to measure and track your weight. Many smart scales will calculate BMI – a number based on your height, weight, and age. Tracking weight and BMI are an essential part of weight management.
  • Have your body fat percentage calculated. While weight and BMI are major data points for tracking weight management success, body fat percentage can tell you if your diet and exercise are having any impact. Knowing your percentage can help offset the frustration of seeing the same number on the scale despite exercising and eating right. Sometimes adding muscle through exercise and losing fat through a healthy diet will lead to a static weight. Losing fat percentage means you are on the right track.
  • Know your body fat weight and lean muscle weight using the equation below: Multiply your weight by your body fat percentage. For example, a person who weighs 150 lbs with 21% body fat has 31 lbs of fat and 118 lbs of lean tissue (150 x 0.21 = 31.5 lbs of fat, 150 – 31.5 = 118 lean tissue). Having an understanding of this measurement will offer valuable information on if you are losing fat or losing lean muscle. If fat is on the rise and lean muscle is declining, you’ll know it is time to adjust your program.
  • Take notice of every day changes like how your clothes fit or how you feel. If your clothes are getting baggy or tight, or you feel more alert or sluggish, something is either harming or helping you accomplish your goals.
